The College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham is a major international centre for research and education in medicine, medical sciences, dentistry, nursing and physiotherapy.

Spanning across five Schools: Cancer Sciences, Immunity & Infection, Clinical & Experimental Medicine, Health & Population Sciences and Dentistry, the College research strategy focuses resource to seven principal research domains:

  • Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Neurological Sciences
  • Dentistry
  • Endocrinology and Metabolism
  • Health and Population Sciences
  • Immunity and Infection
  • Reproduction, Genetics and Development

The College works with a wide variety of commercial organisations and aims to use its skills and knowledge, drawing on its international reputation to promote social and cultural well-being as well as aiding economic growth and regeneration. Research in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences is supported by some of the most advanced facilities in Europe.

Technology Platforms include:

  • The Henry Wellcome Building for Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopy.
  • The Birmingham University Imaging Centre (BUIC), an electron microscopy centre and high quality Biomedical Services Unit
  • The Welcome Trust Clinical Research Facility, which includes a dedicated Gene and Cell Therapy facility
  • Cardiovascular labs on the UHBFT and satellite facilities at Birmingham Childrens hospital.
  • A new Clinical Academic Research Centre, located within The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, providing significant research space for translational research
  • A Human Biomaterials Resource Centre
  • Mobile Clinical Research facility (Health Bus)

  • CRUK clinical trials Unit
  • Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit
  • Primary Care Clinical Research and Trials Unit

All three units are now under one umbrella called the Birmingham Centre for Clinical Trials (BCCT).
